About Us In 2012
Reno Rainbow Fest is thrilled to announce the third annual event on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28, 2012. The rainbow flag was first used to symbolize gay pride and diversity by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker and the original was hand-dyed. It first flew in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978. The flag consisted of eight stripes; Baker assigned specific meaning to each of the colours: hot pink - sex, red - life, orange - healing, yellow - sunlight, green - nature, turquoise - magic, blue - serenity, violet - spirit. Reno Rainbow Fest joined Artown in 2011 and continues the relationship in 2012. Over 300,000 participants attended Artown's 17th annual festival in July 2011.
Rainbow Week has been established throughout the LGBT community during the annual Rainbow Fest as a celebration of equality in Reno. All Gay bars/nightclubs in Reno get caught up in Rainbow Week with Out & Proud parties to paint the town in rainbow colors.
Saturday's day long celebration will be held by the scenic Truckee River in downtown Wingfield Park where you can shop numerous exhibitor booths and sample a variety of delicious food.
